Nighttime paving operations can result in rougher pavements than normally would be expected because they result in more transverse joints, which are done at the end of each construction window (Hayhoe et al., 1998). Steps can be taken to minimize the bumps caused by these joints, such as cutting back the joints at the beginning of each night’s paving (See Image) but some roughness may remain.
