Transitions and Cleanup
Transitions
One of the unique features of offpeak paving are the construction of transitions from one elevation to another. Typically transitions are required between a new overlay and existing pavement at the end of a paving period. While a 2-4 inch overlay may not seem like a drastic elevation difference, it can cause problems for aircraft on taxiways and especially runways (give the high speeds encountered on runways). Advisory Circular 150/5370-13 specifies transition construction, between a new overlay and existing pavement (See Images). The goal is to provide a smooth, gradual transition that will not ravel.
Cleanup
Reduced nighttime visibility makes it more difficult to spot debris that could lead to potential FOD. It is best to clean concurrent with construction activity and not wait until it is finished to begin sweeping.
