Production and Transport
Production
The HMA plant should be able to operate at night. In some areas, proximity to housing precludes this.
Transport
Special concerns for nighttime offpeak paving truck transport are:
- Cooler temperatures at night. Mix cooldown in the truck is likely to be greater than it would for daytime operations because nighttime is generally cooler.
- Clearly marked haul route. Disorientation is common in the AOA, especially at night. Clearly mark the haul route to provide direction to truck drivers.
- More trucks. Productivity is of added importance for offpeak construction because of the cost associated with late opening. In order to reduce the risk of low productivity, the number of trucks used (See Image) may be increased above the number typically used to ensure that a lack of trucking does not delay paving. This must be balanced with knowledge of local traffic conditions. Night traffic is usually much less and may require fewer trucks based on faster cycle times.
