Lighting
Nighttime paving requires adequate lighting for safety and construction quality. Advisory Circular 150/5370-13 provides construction-area lighting standards including free-standing work area lighting and construction vehicle lighting. In sum, Advisory Circular 150/5370-13 requires 10 foot-candles of lighting in the work area using 1,000 watt metal halide flood lights (See Image). Often, adequate lighting can come from spacing the lighting units about 100 ft apart on both sides of the workzone. Light towers should not penetrate the Runway Obstacle Free Zone (ROFZ). The exact location and elevation of ROFZs vary depending upon runway category, aircraft type and runway elevation; ask the airport operator about ROFZ requirements. There should be a separate pay item for lighting in the contract. Additionally, Advisory Circular 150/5370-13 requires all construction vehicles (e.g, paver, rollers, etc.) to have lighting (See Images).
