Epoxy
This paint, which is actually a hard plastic, is specified by P-620 as “a two-component, minimum 99 percent solids type system”. In epoxy paint the pigment is set in a binder of thermosetting epoxide polymer that cures or hardens when mixed with a catalyzing agent to form a hard plastic. Thus, epoxy comes as two separate components that harden when mixed together.
Advantages of epoxy paint:
- More durable than waterbourne or solvent-based paint. Paint can be expected to last 5 years or more.
Issues with epoxy paint:
- Lower coverage rate (90 ft2/gallon) requires more time and paint.
- Durability means that subsequent removal will require more time and could cause more damage to the underlying HMA.
