Temporary Markings
The FAA recommends waiting 24-30 days after paving to apply permanent markings. Typically this results in the final markings being applied after grooving operations. Temporary markings (see Image) can be applied so that the airfield can be used in the interim. Temporary markings are usually waterborne paint, do not require glass beads and are applied at 30-50% of the specified application rate. The final marking application must still be at 100% of the specified rate to adequately set the glass beads. Although P-620 does not provide guidance on temporary pavement marking dimensions, a good rule-of-thumb is to make the temporary markings slightly smaller (2 to 6 inches less) than the required dimensions of the permanent markings. That way, permanent markings can be painted over the temporary ones without fear that the temporary marking will blur or encroach on the permanent marking edges.
