AAPTP: Airport Asphalt Technology Program

Handwork

Most HMA is placed with the asphalt paver, however HMA can be placed by hand in situations where the paver cannot place it adequately. Generally this occurs around the edges of paved areas, utilities, lighting (although lighting can often be cut out) and filets between taxiways and runways. Some handwork can occur on longitudinal joints as well. Handwork should be kept to a minimum because:

  1. it can segregate the mix
  2. it can result in a rougher surface texture than HMA finished by the paver screed
  3. it is harder to control elevation tight enough to avoid localized depressions (often called “birdbaths) in handwork areas.

In general, airfield HMA paving involves less handwork than roadway paving.
