In addition to light fixtures, utility access can also be located in the pavement. Items like manholes can be set in a concrete base that is slightly bigger than the manhole itself. When milling existing pavement, these utilities must be carefully located and skipped over with the milling machine. Options for milling near these utilities are:

  • Hand removal. Jackhammers (see Image) can be used to remove HMA close to utilities.
  • Small milling machines. Some small milling machines (see Image) can be maneuvered around utilities, which can save time over hand removal.

When paving around utilities and other obstructions, the same techniques used in roadway paving can be used; namely, handwork and hand-operated compaction (see Image).
