Kahului Airport is the principal commercial airport for the island of Maui. Maui’s primary industry is tourism with 2.2 million visitors per year, of which most arrive via air through Kahului Airport. In the 12 months ending on 21 March 2007, Kahului experienced 164,914 air operations (67,442 of which were air carrier operations). A bulk of the air carrier operations are jetliners ranging from 737s and 717s (inter-island traffic) to 767s and 777s (flights from the continental U.S.). There are two principal runways, 02/20 and 05/23, of which 02/20 is the longest at 6,995 ft and is the only one long enough to handle the jetliners from the mainland U.S. (757, 767, 777, DC-10). These jetliners typically arrive during daylight hours and there are no alternative airports for landing on Maui. Rerouting to other islands would cause significant passenger delay and lost revenue for airlines and Maui. This situation makes Kahului Airport’s runway 02/20 a good candidate for nighttime construction as the alternative, a full shutdown, would involve flight rerouting/cancelling resulting in large user costs.
